Educationist and chief
patron Ms Sunita Kanoria took up the reins of the Suryodaya Schools in 2012. These are
two
English medium secondary schools which provide services to children coming from slum
areas
in Kolkata, one in Santoshpur and the other one in Birati. She leads a committed team of
teachers and staff who work tirelessly to provide quality and holistic education to
children
coming from the weaker socio-economic sections of the society. Besides innovative
methods of
teaching academics, vocational training is provided in a number of areas such as
computer,
dance, art and craft- all on the school premises, in an attempt to develop all round
performers. Suryodaya promotes the health and over-all well-being of the children coming
to
the school through various initiatives such as a healthy and nutritious meal at
lunch-time;
health checks and referrals for treatment as required. Children are motivated to perform
in
a student friendly environment where the ethos is a belief in the potential of each
child.
Mrs Kanoria’s tireless efforts ensure that both the schools prepare our children to be
worthy citizens of society.

Right from her formative years, Sunita dreamt of creating a better world and wanted to use education as an effective tool for social change, eradicating poverty, illiteracy and gender bias. She initiated the light of education in the late nineties by first being a teacher to little children at Mothers Care Montessori. She learnt to nurture little minds to eventually become a successful and experienced educationist. Eventually she moved out on her own in 2004 and started the Suryodaya School of Montessori and playhouse. She established this world class Montessori at Highland Park, a modern and beautiful property on the bypass – the outer fringes of Kolkata.
As Chief Patron of Suryodaya Schools (A Suryodaya Foundation Initiative), she has been working tirelessly towards fulfilling her vision of providing low-cost but quality education and nutrition to deprived children, making them self-dependant.
Sunita's will power, dedication and determination have turned her dream into reality. At present, in the Suryodaya Schools for under privileged run two secondary level schools in Kolkata with a combined capacity of 700 students.
The schools provide a nurturing and caring environment with comprehensive quality education that is affordable for masses.Under her guidance and leadership, the schools have been transforming young minds in more ways than one. Suryodaya Schools provide textbooks, notebooks and uniforms and offer students free mid-day meals and vocational/Skilled base courses for children and parents. Further, under her direction and supervision she initiated various activities at the Suryodaya Activity Centre in 2014.
She encourages children from all walks of life to come together for various activities bring simple fund and joy in their lives. The Schools are managed by a team of highly qualified, experienced and skilled teachers along with trained administrative staff. Today, Sunita is one of the most respected women entrepreneurs in the country.
She is also Senior Vice President of FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO), Kolkata.
